As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit set by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, equating to 15-20x exceeding acceptable standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Developments

Since 2020, the government had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that covers the city as winter approaches.

However earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership approached the highest court to request a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Court Verdict and Implementation

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court approved the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Several recording stations throughout Delhi showed contamination peaking around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the events.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the city have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The problem in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating toxic haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Medical and Financial Impact

The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in the capital.
