The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
