The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Recent Judicial Appeals

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
