Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
